5 Reasons to Carve out time for Strength Training

I talk a lot about strength training on all of my channels. Every person on this planet needs to be getting in exercise that builds and maintains muscle mass. No matter what your goal is (assuming you want to be healthy), some type of strength training should be prioritized in your program…even if your goal is to run faster. The type of strength training you do should depend on where you are starting from and the specific goals that you have. A person that wants to get stronger to perform better at a specific sport is going to be doing workouts that look very different than someone who is significantly overweight and doing it for health reasons.

What I want to hit home for you today is that if you are a human, you need to carve out time to increase your muscle mass. The benefits go way beyond your goals.

So, with all of that said, know that, yes, I am saying every one needs to strength train, but, no, I am not saying there is one way to do it. It does not matter your age or gender. Studies have shown that all ages and genders can improve muscle mass.

The incredible benefits on overall health

Everyone’s health can benefit from increasing their muscle mass. It does not even need to be a large increase. When you improve your muscle mass, the following improves too:

  • Decreased Body Fat
  • Increased Bone Density
  • Increased Resting Metabolism
  • Improved Insulin Sensitivity
  • Reduces Blood Pressure
  • Improves Heart Health

Improved Physical Function

I love all of the things that strength training does for my body, but, this is probably my favorite because, for me, my body provides the means for adventure. I love to be active whether that is hiking, horseback riding, ice skating or just hitting a volleyball back and forth with my favorite kid. When I am strong in a very functional way, I don’t think twice about participating in opportunities. I have had the misfortune of health issues that really set my muscle health back and it was very distressing to be limited in what I can do physically. This affected me so much mentally especially being that this is my chosen profession. My confidence took a hit and I have seen many clients over the years experience the same things.

Whether you are an athlete and want to function better for a sport or you simply want to garden without pain for the rest of your life, choose strength training to increase your capabilities and the enjoyment level in what you love!

Increased confidence

I have been fit the majority of my life with a few ups and downs, but still, ultimately fit until 2021 when I had some health issues that really stopped me in my tracks. It affected every single aspect of my life.

I always knew that being strong and feeling good physically played a major role in how we feel about ourselves, but, it wasn’t until even going for a walk felt strenuous that I really experienced it myself. I have been through it with clients, but, it isn’t until you really stand in the shoes that you get it.

With that said, meeting yourself where you are and progressing in a way that makes sense for you is how you get your confidence back.

Improved mood

Strength training improves your mood in many ways. Obviously if your confidence is down, your mood is going to follow as I talked about above. But, did you know that engaging in different types of strength training, you produce hormones and neurotransmitters that effect your mood, energy, memory and feelings of well-being?

Other ways that exercise improves mood is that it connects you with your body (if you aren’t mindlessly on cardio equipment watching TV). Being connected to your body is a form of meditation! Meditation has been linked to decreased stress and better health!

There is also evidence that it can help you sleep better and if you sleep better, your mood and overall health is absolutely going to benefit!

enjoy being active for the rest of your life

This one is probably the most important point in my eyes. I have had the privilege to work with a few clients for many years and through the aging process. I have taken one lesson that I learned early on in my career very seriously. That is how people get up off of the floor or out of a chair is very telling about the trajectory they could be on.

I don’t know about you, but, I want to be doing whatever I want to be able to do physically for the long haul. The only way to do that is to use it or lose it.

You will be ahead of the game if you improve and maintain your muscle mass and move every joint in all the planes as often as you can.
